Pink Grass and Other Digressions

When I mentioned yesterday that it was breezy, I forgot to say that the wind got pretty strong at times. The magnolias, which don’t last long as it is, are now losing their beautiful pink petals. The lawn beneath the trees is covered in pink, and it looks like pink grass. The white buds from other trees are also falling, so we now have pastel yards in our neighborhood. In the back, we’ll also have an area of red – the Japanese Maples are starting to drop little buds, too. I love this time of year – everything is awash in gorgeous colors. No artist could ever capture this beauty. But I digress…

My boys are coming tonight, so I’m getting a bit of dinner prep completed throughout the day. We’re having slow-roasted spare ribs, and I’ve already completed the initial steps. I get a large rack of ribs and lay them out on a baking sheet. I make a concoction of salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and brown sugar. This dry rub goes all over the ribs, and they go into a 250° oven to slowly roast. I’m having red potatoes and apples, which get cut into chunks (my husband’s job) and placed on a baking sheet. I salt the potatoes and sprinkle cinnamon on the apples. At that point, I turn the oven up to 350° and spread BBQ sauce on the ribs. I put that and the potatoes and apples in for a half hour. Meanwhile, I’m going to blanch some asparagus, then finish them in the oven. I’ll make a baby spinach salad with strawberries, mandarin oranges, and a light, sweet vinaigrette. Dessert is just
Jell-o. These are all easy to prepare, and I can work in small time frames so I don’t overdo. I’ll try to remember to take my camera into the kitchen. But I digress…

I’ve gone through rehab, and I think I may be recovering from my Pinterest overdose. I still go on to find recipes or crafts, etc., but I’m not sitting there being sucked into pin after pin. I had to go cold turkey, at first because I knew I wouldn’t be able to taper off. I didn’t want to go through withdrawal without help, though. So, the time I would have spent drooling over boards, I use for reading – a much better addiction.  I think I’m at a happy medium, now, and I plan to stay that way. But I digress…

I never have problems sleeping as so many others do, but lately I’ve been noticing a pattern. I fall asleep all right after a short time, but something wakes me up anywhere from 1:00 to 3:00. At first, I thought it was the dogs. We have a nightly canine concerto from all the neighboring pups – one soprano even howls a loud falsetto. But I realized that I’ve become accustomed to that music, and it just plays in the background. This mental alarm must be from a dream, but I can’t remember it when I jump awake. It’s not food – I don’t eat at night. It isn’t a need for the loo. And it’s not the temperature. It’s something in my Swiss-cheese brain. Oh, well, naps are always a way to catch up on lost sleep. But I digress…

So, what’s with all the digressions, and what’s the main point of this post? I guess it’s just a wee peek into how my mind works nowadays. It’s full, but has no central theme. Maybe I’ll do better tomorrow – without digressing!

Peace,

Muff

    1. The magnolias are just gorgeous, but they last such a short time. I wish I could glue the blossoms so the beauty would last a little longer.

  2. You paint quite a canvas. Makes me think of an Impressionist painting.

    1. For me, it's a residential rehab facility! No cost at all -- just a lot of will power! Sign up -- we'll meet in the rec room!

    1. Pinterest actually came about with me because of my love of cooking and baking! But I also like the crafts, interior design, fashion, animals... See why I needed an intervention!
