Kids Say the Darndest Things!

I’m getting a late start here. The AC in this room wasn’t cool enough, and I think it affected my computer. I shut it down and started it up from scratch. It’s working all right now, but I have to be sure it stays cool (just like me!)

That title up there came from a real oldie. My mother used to watch House Party with Art Linkletter. I was too young to remember it, but I do recall the segments where Art would interview young children. The audience got a kick out of their responses. They were so unfiltered! I think that’s why my parents had the rule: “What happens in this house stays in this house.” (I guess Las Vegas stole it from them!) It was a good admonition, though, and we never just blurted out anything. We kept the same motto when our kids were young, and now my daughter tries to do likewise.

Even with that caveat, though, I still find myself laughing at the things my little grands will say.

1       1. Last week my daughter said to the younger one, “You cannot go outside until you put your shorts on. He responded, “Ready!” This is what she saw when she turned around.
Try as I might, I cannot turn this photo around!!!

     2. When they were here on Sunday, the younger one did something praiseworthy, and my daughter said he could have some M&Ms. The older one said he would get them and bounded into the living room toward the candy dish. I handed him a paper cup to retrieve them. When he returned, the cup was filled with candy. My daughter said, “He can’t have that many.” Little Guy said, “I know. I’ll give him three, and I’ll eat the rest.” My daughter seized the cup.

     3.  When we took Little Guy to Michael’s, he kept finding some outlandish items. I reminded him that we were at the store to get him more art supplies. His comment? “I know. These things are for my brother, and then he can share them with me!” (He told me something similar when I asked if he knew what we should get for his brother’s birthday!)

          4. The two of them, despite being potty trained, always announce when they need to use the bathroom, and then proceed to tell in fine detail, the end result! (My daughter is working hard on this one!)

There are so many other little tidbits that I should write them all down. I’ll miss it when they get bigger and more civilized.

I do believe that Mr. Linkletter had it right when he said that kids really do say the darndest things!

Peace,

Muff

  1. All funny, but those shorts on the head really cracked me up. What a little comedian...and SO tuned in to the subtile nuances of language. That's pretty darn smart for one that age.

  2. My nieces eldest was taught to never get on the horse unsupervised, without his boots, gloves, and hat. She found him on the horse naked (he had climbed the fence) and his reply to getting in trouble for climbing over the fence and being naked was : but I have on my hat and boots!

    1. It's almost a pity that when they grow up, that spontaneity weakens!
