I tried to jam a lot into the days I had my little guy, and we had a ball. It’s so neat to see how nicely he’s growing up (well, mostly – more about that later.) My daughter only stayed a short time on Friday, and then she and the little brother took off for North Jersey to be with her husband’s family.
Little guy immediately wanted to play, which we did until dinner time. I’m amazed that his eating habits have changed so quickly. He used to eat just a few things, but now that he’s discovered Mexican food, he eats a lot. Friday, he just wanted chips and salsa, and he ate two plates of them. Of course, there’s always room for an ice cream sundae! He watched a movie (Veggie Tales: The Pirates Who Couldn’t Do Anything – a real oldie!) and went right off to bed.
I was nervous about Saturday because my husband would be gone all day, and I hoped I could manage. Not to worry! He was a doll, and the day flew by. We did a lot of arts and crafts, making pictures for his Grammy. He watched a little TV, and he built huge towers with his Lego’s. He even helped me get lunch together and clean up after! On Sunday, I held my breath when we went to church. He can be really squirmy and loud. Not this time, though. He had a tote full of books, and he read them quietly, even whispering to me instead of talking out loud. I was thrilled! He wanted chicken tacos for dinner, and he ate every bit of them. I made him “dirt” for dessert which he thought was hysterical! (It’s just layers of ground Oreos and chocolate pudding.)
On Monday, my husband walked him to the playground, and when they returned, we took him to Michael’s for new art supplies. Mexico that night was quesadillas, and he ate all of it. Another night of the same movie, and he was off to bed. My daughter came yesterday afternoon, and that’s when the halo turned to horns. He yelled and pushed his little brother, grabbed his toys, and was just a bully. All good things must end, I suppose. My daughter said it’s because he wants to be the only one who has my attention, and I guess she’s right.
The only bad part of his stay is the early rising (5:30, 6:30, 5:50, 6:00) I need my sleep, but he’s ready to go. I keep him in bed with me, and we watch cartoons until my husband gets up at 7:00, showers, and takes him down for breakfast. He no longer takes naps, so that’s a bummer, but he does have a ‘quiet time’ when he reads or builds but doesn’t talk. It works.
Now, we’re getting back to normal, and I’ll have my big boys tonight. It was a fun time, though, and I miss him when he’s not here.
