Friday Fragments

Another week torn from the calendar of my ‘exciting’ life!

Weather:  We’re in a pattern of twice-a-week winter advisories, then nada. All the storms that begin by looking ominous for us turn out to be nothing. The track always moves to the north, and we end up skirting disaster. I love the look of a heavy snow, but not the consequences – unable to walk on icy grounds, my husband having to shovel a path, and the ugly remnants that eventually look like black hills. So, I’m really not complaining about the big storms missing us. I have noticed that the meteorologists are much more careful in their predictions after that epic fail a few weeks ago.

Peevish – again:  I’m still getting annoyed at the many grammatical bloopers I see and hear. Case in point, again, is the misuse of farther and further. I just saw it in a book I read. Farther means distance (the word far is right there.) Further means additional. I know that many dictionaries and other texts now say the words are used interchangeably, but really, that’s wrong.  Another peeve is literally. Examples: “I literally fell off my chair when she said that.” So you were on the floor? “He literally exploded!” Did they pick up all the body parts? I get sarcastic like that when I see the misuse of the word. Either leave it out or say ‘figuratively.’

Think Spring: I know – it’s still many weeks away, but I like to envision that season. My husband did some planting in the fall, and I can’t wait to see the blooms. I love that first touch of spring when the world looks as if it were colored in pastels. That hazy green on the trees, and the misty pinks on the gardens all spell spring to me. Then I think of not having to bundle up in coats but just wearing a light sweater. I can open windows and everything smells like the sunny breezes outside. Ahhh, it’s such a nice season. I suppose I can hang on a while longer.

Nice Gesture: The funeral home that handled my mother’s arrangements had a tree planted in her name. I thought that was such a great idea. I’ve received many condolence letters, countless Mass cards, flowers, and charitable donations in mom’s name, but this really struck me as unique and worthwhile. I know the home used to send angel ornaments to the families, but a tree planting is so much nicer.

Books/TV:  I haven’t finished the Bohjalian book yet, but I have one waiting that I’m anxious to dive into – Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. I’ve enjoyed her other books, and I’m looking forward to this one, too.
TV is the same. I watch my shows or record them, and watch on Saturdays. My DVR is loaded, but a lot of the programs are for children, just waiting for my two little guys.

That’s all for now. Being a hermit doesn’t give me much to write about.

Peace,

Muff

  2. Oh, that's sad about your trees. I'm hoping our pesky squirrels haven't stolen the bulbs -- again!! [Ours aren't as polite as yours!!]
